A Lifetime Dedicated to Puppetry
For more than five decades, Lourdes Pérez Gay has shaped the landscape of Mexican puppetry. Passionate about children’s theater, she has directed and performed in over 40 shows with more than 3,500 performances, bringing stories to life for audiences across Mexico and around the world.
Among her most beloved works are Historias en Colores (Stories in Colors), Dibújame una vaca (Draw Me a Cow), El intruso (The Intruder), and El sueño de la bella durmiente (The Dream of Sleeping Beauty). These productions have toured extensively, appearing at national and international festivals and as part of the INBA School Theater program.
From Mascarones to Marionetas de la Esquina
Lourdes’ theatrical roots trace back to political theater with the group Mascarones. In 1976, she co-founded the Marionetas de la Esquina company with her partner Lucio Espíndola (RIP). What began as a pioneering puppet company for children has since grown into one of the most important institutions of its kind in Mexico.
Later, her daughter Amaranta Leyva joined as playwright and collaborator, enriching the company’s repertoire and expanding its artistic vision.
La Titería Cultural Center
In 2014, Pérez Gay and her team realized another dream: La Titería Cultural Center in Coyoacán, Mexico City. Built from the ground up, La Titería remains a vibrant space for cultural exchange, puppetry, and performance — a living testament to her tireless commitment to the art form.
A Pillar of UNIMA Mexico
Beyond her artistic work, Lourdes has also been a driving force within the puppetry community. She founded UNIMA Mexico, served as an Honorary Member, and today contributes her wisdom as part of the Honorary Ethics Council.
Why This Talk Matters
This special UNIMA Mexico Talk is not only a chance to hear the stories behind 50 years of creative practice, but also to reflect on how puppetry continues to evolve as an art form — bridging communities, nurturing imagination, and inspiring new generations of artists.
