Ukrainian Puppet Theatre in Times of War
Event Date: October 25, 2025 — 18:00 CET / 19:00 Kyiv time
“Live a normal life in non-normal conditions.”
This line from The Nuclear Mermaid — a play created during the full-scale russian invasion of Ukraine by the Lviv Academic Regional Puppet Theatre — captures the essence of what it means to make art in wartime.
Ukrainian puppeteers live this motto every day. Despite blackouts, bombings, and financial hardship, they continue to stage premieres, run festivals, organize workshops, and teach — refusing to let the flame of creativity die out.
At this upcoming event, four leading voices in Ukrainian puppet theatre will share how they continue to “live a normal life in non-normal conditions” through their art:
Mykhailo Urytskyi — Director and educator, Kyiv
Sofiia Rosa-Lavrentii — Theatre scholar and lecturer, Lviv
Olga Dorofieieva — Theatre scholar and cultural manager, Kharkiv
Daria Ivanova-Hololobova — President of UNIMA-UKRAINE
🎭 Join this conversation about resilience, creativity, and the power of puppetry in times of war.
