Reimagining Judy: A Feminist Lens on Puppet Theatre
Wednesday 12 November, 19:30 GMT ONLINE - An exclusive online talk with Alissa Mello –
What happens when we put women at the heart of puppet theatre history?
In this compelling online event, theatre artist and scholar Alissa Mello invites us into The Judy Project — a ground-breaking research journey that reclaims the Punch & Judy tradition through a feminist lens.
📌 Date: Wednesday, 12 November 2025
🕢 Time: 19:30 GMT
📍 Location: Online via Zoom (link below for BrUNIMA members)
Alissa Mello’s work uncovers the forgotten stories of female puppet-makers, performers, and visionaries who helped shape this iconic form from the 18th century onwards. Funded by a Horizon 2020 Marie Skłodowska-Curie fellowship and hosted by the University of Exeter, The Judy Project challenges dominant narratives in puppet history — centering the voices, contributions, and activism of women.
Expect a thoughtful, inspiring evening of performance history, archival surprises, and lively discussion on gender, tradition, and reimagining heritage for the future.
🎟️ Exclusive to attend for paid BrUNIMA members
