About the event
What happens when we put women at the heart of puppet theatre history?
In this compelling online event, theatre artist and scholar Alissa Mello invites us into The Judy Project — a ground-breaking research journey that reclaims the Punch & Judy tradition through a feminist lens.
Alissa Mello’s work uncovers the forgotten stories of female puppet-makers, performers, and visionaries who helped shape this iconic form from the 18th century onwards. Funded by a Horizon 2020 Marie Skłodowska-Curie fellowship and hosted by the University of Exeter, The Judy Project challenges dominant narratives in puppet history — centering the voices, contributions, and activism of women.
Expect a thoughtful, inspiring evening of performance history, archival surprises, and lively discussion on gender, tradition, and reimagining heritage for the future.
