Visual Theatre and Contemporary Puppetry: Material, Metaphor and Pedagogy Yun Geng and Sean Myatt in conversation discussing the practice of Philippe Genty

This conversation brings together Sean Myatt and Yun Geng in conversation about contemporary puppetry and visual theatre as practices of material thinking, embodied performance and theatrical meaning-making.

Moving between artistic practice, teaching and research, the discussion will consider how puppets, objects, materials and bodies create meaning beyond spoken text. It will explore questions of visual metaphor and symbolism, the relationship between performer and object, and the ways in which puppetry and material-based performance can inform contemporary theatre training and higher education pedagogy.

The conversation may also touch on intercultural practice, considering how puppetry and visual theatre methods shift when they move across different languages, institutions and artistic contexts. Rather than focusing on a single method, tradition or national frame, the event opens up a wider discussion about how material, movement, imagination and pedagogy intersect across contemporary performance practice.
