There will be displays, talks, and short performances. A ticket is required for entry. If you wish, you can also book for talks and performances.
A Celebration of Marionettes 2025
Rachel Warr and the Art Workers’ Guild Outreach committee invite you to discover and celebrate the world of marionettes.
Join us on Wednesday 3 December for an evening of displays, talks, demonstrations and short performances with marionettes.
Come and explore:
Displays of marionettes, from the beautiful to the experimental
Talks on complex collaborations, apprenticeships and stringed puppets in East Asia
Hands on opportunities to have a go at puppeteering
Hands-on opportunities to make a simple stringed puppet from foraged materials
A selection of short marionette performances from expert performers
Contributors include:
The Puppet Theatre Barge, Stan Middleton, Sarah Vigars, Siân Kidd, Oliver Smart, Roger and Julie Lade, David Curell, Ronnie Le Drew, Alicia Britt, Edie Edmundson, Laura Mathews, Eilidh Bryan, Bori Mezo and others.
Entry to the event is free, but booking is essential as places are limited.

Twelve makers have been given the challenge of making marionettes using a selection of odd bits, including children’s wooden building blocks, skittles and used playing cards. Join us to find out more about this experiment in making.

Oliver Smart will discuss his creative methodology distilling the essential character of a butterfly in the art work Puppet Flutter/Flight is a Waltz; a collaboration with artist Dominic Harris.

How do we attract and support the next generation to specialise in heritage puppetry forms? Alicia Britt will speak about her marionette apprenticeship training and her recent residencies in Taiwan and Vietnam.
