As part of the Bristol Experimental Puppet Festival, Undergrowth is bringing Irish-American puppet maker Anne Murray to Bristol for a two-day glove puppet workshop — and it promises to be something a bit special.
Anne’s project, Refuge Puppets, uses puppetry as a tool for healing, advocacy and solidarity — working with communities affected by trauma and displacement. Her approach is warm, practical and deeply human: puppets as a way of creating safe space together.
Over two sessions across two weekends, you’ll carve puppet heads and hands from re-harvested styrofoam and cardboard, construct a glove puppet body from recycled clothing, paint and finish your puppet, and leave with a completed character — made by your own hands, from materials given a second life.
Come with an old piece of clothing to recycle and an idea of the character you’d like to create. Some base fabric will be provided. No experience necessary — just curiosity and a willingness to make something together.
