Tomorrow, BrUNIMA Co-Chair Sean Myatt joins an exceptional panel of artists and researchers for an afternoon exploring the fascinating world of puppetry for screen.

Whether you’re a puppeteer, designer, filmmaker, student, researcher, or simply curious about how puppetry is used in contemporary film and technology, this promises to be a fascinating opportunity to hear directly from practitioners working at the highest level of the industry.

Hosted at Nottingham Trent University as part of the Nottingham Puppet Festival, the event brings together leading voices from across film, performance and robotics to explore how puppetry continues to influence storytelling, character creation and emerging technologies.

🎭 Sean Myatt
Senior Lecturer in Theatre Design at Nottingham Trent University and Co-Chair of BrUNIMA, Sean has worked as a puppeteer, performer and educator for more than thirty years. His practice spans traditional and contemporary puppetry, object theatre, carnival and opera across the UK and Europe.

🎬 Martin Rezard
Character and creature designer whose work includes Lucasfilm, Marvel, Harry Potter, Maleficent and the forthcoming Project Hail Mary. Martin will discuss creature design, practical effects and creating characters for major film productions.

🎥 Claire Roi Harvey
An award-winning puppeteer, builder and puppetry director whose work spans Star Wars, Jurassic World, Doctor Who, The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, Willow and many more. Claire will offer a rare insight into the practical realities—and hidden artistry—of puppeteering behind the camera.

What a moment to be part of the puppetry world.
Last month, Bristol’s Experimental Puppet Festival which wrapped up on 14 June was buzzing — a wonderful showcase of adventurous puppet work from local and international artists.

Happening right now: The Nottingham Puppet Festival is underway right now and runs until 5 July — if you can get there, do. The Beverley Puppet Trail continues until 26 July, a lovely smaller-scale celebration well worth the journey. And the Fairy Tales exhibition at the British Library — featuring puppets from the LAT — runs until 23 August, a beautiful pairing of heritage and craft.

Coming up: the Little Angel Theatre Children’s Puppet Festival runs 28 July – 30 August, now in its fourth year and celebrating the theatre’s 65th anniversary. There’s also a marionette summer camp in St Albans, online workshops, a puppet film night from BrUNIMA, and much more below.

British UNIMA is actively seeking nominations for both roles, and we’d love to hear from you. These are genuinely rewarding positions — a chance to help shape the direction of UK puppetry, strengthen our international connections through UNIMA, and support a vibrant community of makers, performers, researchers and enthusiasts. Whether you’re a long-standing member or someone newer to the network, we’d encourage you to consider it. There’s no single template for who should apply — we welcome nominations from members of any background and at any stage of their career. It’s also a brilliant opportunity to develop your experience in arts leadership, governance and international networks.

For the Treasurer role in particular, we’d love to hear from anyone with an interest in fundraising as well as financial oversight — members themselves raised this at the AGM as an important quality to bring to the role. AGM — 14 June 2026

Our AGM this year was a genuinely warm and energising occasion, held in hybrid format and hosted generously by The Puppet Barge Theatre. The afternoon was enriched by a programme of performances arranged by committee member Fagner Gastaldon of Puppet Soup, whose Lambe Lambe workshop was a highlight — and among the participants was a recipient of a BrUNIMA scholarship, a lovely full-circle moment. Cariad shared that she had spoken with the scholarship recipient, who told her the award had changed their life. It was a powerful reminder of why this organisation matters and what membership makes possible.

Thank you to everyone who joined us, in person and online, and a special thank you to Puppet Soup, to the Puppet Barge, and to all who contributed to making it such a memorable afternoon.

We owe an enormous debt of gratitude to Cariad Astles, who has stepped down as Chair and Trustee after years of dedicated and visionary leadership. Cariad has shaped British UNIMA into the connected, forward-looking organisation it is today — her commitment to international partnerships, inclusive practice, and the wider puppetry community has been extraordinary. Sean Myatt will be taking on some leadership responsibility during the transition period, and we are deeply grateful to him for stepping up.

Paul Piris has also given notice of his intention to step down as Treasurer — he has generously given six months for the committee to find a successor, so while the search starts now there is time to find the right person. Paul’s careful stewardship of BrUNIMA’s finances has been invaluable, and we wish him well. The AGM also voted unanimously to make both Meg Amsden and Paul Piris honorary life members of British UNIMA — a small but heartfelt recognition of their remarkable contributions to the organisation over many years.

A couple of other things worth flagging from the AGM: work on inclusivity and access is ongoing, with Sean Myatt and Nenagh Watson currently awaiting a report from Equity — more on that when it lands. And if you are a UK-based company, venue, practitioner or festival, it is worth knowing that the WEPA international puppetry directory is being updated and UK entries are actively being sought. BrUNIMA in the Czech Republic — a puppetry pilgrimage

Some of us recently had the great fortune to spend time in the Czech Republic, taking in its extraordinary puppet festival scene. We visited Plzeň for the Skupa Festival at Alfa Theatre — a city best known for its beer, but which holds a very special place in puppetry history as the birthplace of Josef Skupa and his iconic duo Spejbl and Hurvínek — and Hradec Králové, home of the legendary Drak Theatre and its puppet museum, and one of the country’s most important theatre festivals, the European Regions Festival (Festival REGIONY), which features over 25 puppet shows across the historic city centre. We highly recommend!

It was a reminder of just how deeply puppetry is woven into Czech cultural life. According to Czech Loutkář magazine, there were 26 puppet festivals in the country in 2025 alone — and that’s widely considered an underestimate. The range is extraordinary: from avant-garde work in tiny Baroque cellars to large festivals that take over entire cities.

If you’re thinking about a trip, we’d strongly recommend getting in touch with Leah Gaffen at Puppets in Prague, whose knowledge of the scene is second to none - more info here. Other festivals worth knowing about include Letní Letná in Prague — a three-week international new circus and theatre festival drawing over 60,000 people, with a strong puppet strand — the Forman Brothers’ Arena Festival, and the magical Baroque town of Kuks, which hosts two puppet festivals across the summer and draws on the Czech tradition while pushing it in exciting new directions.

Most of these Czech festivals take place in June each year. If a puppetry-packed trip to the Czech Republic appeals, start planning now — it is genuinely worth the journey.

🎭 A busy month for puppetry

The Little Angel Theatre Children’s Puppet Festival returns 28 July – 30 August, now in its fourth year and celebrating the theatre’s 65th anniversary. It’s one of the UK’s key puppetry events of the year — packed with performances, workshops and new work for children, families and practitioners. Highlights include the world premiere of The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, a new marionette production written, directed and designed by associate director Oliver Hymans, plus five visiting companies and a full season of workshops. Productions this year include Tiny Planet, At Sea, Jack and the Beanstalk (Sort Of), Club Origami, and Puffling Percy.

A strong year for submissions and member engagement — thank you to everyone who has contributed. Tim Garrett and the team continue to do wonderful work. One question that will be coming to members soon: rising print costs mean the committee needs to think carefully about the future of the printed edition.

🎓 UNIMA International Certified Workshops Framework
A new framework from UNIMA International’s Training and Research Commission recognises puppetry training workshops that meet professional and pedagogical standards. Approved workshops can present themselves as UNIMA Training Workshops, use the UNIMA logo, and issue Certificates of Participation to UNIMA members. Minimum requirements: at least 40 hours or an intensive 5–6 day format, with qualified instructors. Proposals must be submitted to the Training and Research Commission at least three months before the event. Well worth exploring if you run or are planning a training programme. More info

🌍 UNIMA’s road to 100
UNIMA International has begun sharing early ideas for the journey toward its centenary in 2029, culminating in Prague — the city where UNIMA was founded. Having recently spent time there ourselves, it feels like a fitting and deeply meaningful location for that milestone. Early proposals include international exhibitions, archiving projects, global collaborations between National Centres, a centenary song, and future publications. 🎬 Spotlight: Puppets and Technology — Czech Scene Designer of the Year

One of the highlights of our time in the Czech Republic was encountering the work of Dominik Migac, another great recommendation from our friends at Puppets in Prague and recently awarded Czech Scene Designer of 2025 — a remarkable recognition for a young and little-known artist. His award-winning puppet show explores the banality of totalitarianism through extraordinary mechanical ingenuity, and the behind the scenes trailer alone is worth your time. Dominik has also been working at the intersection of puppetry and technology, developing automata that move using sensors — a glimpse of where the craft might be heading.

Our friends at Puppets in Prague have featured his work and it is well worth exploring a talk he held as part of their puppet recipes back in May 2026.

As the UK National Centre of UNIMA (Union Internationale de la Marionnette), we connect puppeteers, makers, educators, researchers, students, organisations and enthusiasts across the UK while building relationships with colleagues around the world.

Our committee is made up of volunteers who care about puppetry and want to support the sector. Together we organise talks and events, share opportunities through our newsletter, promote UK puppetry internationally, and help connect our members with the wider UNIMA community.

A note on transition

Chair

The Chair helps provide leadership for the committee, chairs meetings, and works with committee members to support British UNIMA’s activities and future direction.

We’re looking for someone who enjoys bringing people together, encouraging ideas and helping projects move forward.

Typical responsibilities include:

• Chairing committee meetings

• Supporting and coordinating the committee

• Helping develop British UNIMA’s vision and activities

• Acting as an ambassador for the organisation

• Working with the committee to support our charitable objectives

Treasurer

The Treasurer oversees British UNIMA’s finances and supports the committee in ensuring strong financial governance, sustainability, and income generation.

This role is not only about bookkeeping — it also plays an important part in helping the organisation explore funding opportunities, support basic income generation ideas, and contribute to the financial sustainability of British UNIMA.

A full handover will be provided, along with ongoing support from the committee.

Responsibilities include:

• Monitoring income and expenditure

• Supporting financial reporting to committee meetings

• Assisting with annual accounts

• Helping with budgeting and planning

• Supporting fundraising and income generation activity

• Contributing ideas for funding applications and sustainability

• Working with the committee on financial decision-making

Time commitment

Both roles are voluntary.

Committee meetings are generally held online, with occasional in-person meetings and events. The time commitment varies throughout the year but is designed to fit around work and other commitments.

Last month, 20 May, marks the 97th anniversary of UNIMA (Union Internationale de la Marionnette) — the international organisation for puppetry arts, founded in Prague in 1929.

As the British Centre of UNIMA, we are proud to celebrate this milestone alongside colleagues, members and puppetry communities around the world.

For nearly a century, UNIMA has helped connect puppeteers, makers, performers, educators, researchers, festivals and organisations across borders, strengthening international exchange and supporting puppetry in all its forms.
UNIMA International has begun sharing early ideas for the journey toward UNIMA’s 100th anniversary in 2029, which will culminate in Prague, the city where UNIMA was founded.

Kasper & Friends go UNESCO – Survey and Network Meeting
A new initiative, Kasper & Friends go UNESCO, is working to highlight the shared tradition of comic glove puppetry figures across Europe and explore a possible future inscription on UNESCO’s list of intangible cultural heritage.

The working group is inviting puppeteers, theatre practitioners, researchers and heritage specialists to contribute to an initial survey mapping existing traditions, current theatre practice, research and national heritage initiatives.

Celebrating 97 years of international puppetry connection

Today, 20 May, marks the 97th anniversary of UNIMA (Union Internationale de la Marionnette) — the international organisation for puppetry arts, founded in Prague in 1929.

As the British Centre of UNIMA, we are proud to celebrate this milestone alongside colleagues, members and puppetry communities around the world.

For nearly a century, UNIMA has helped connect puppeteers, makers, performers, educators, researchers, festivals and organisations across borders, strengthening international exchange and supporting puppetry in all its forms.

Here in the UK, British UNIMA is proud to contribute to that wider network through events, advocacy, international exchange, publications and conversations that support our sector and connect practitioners.

Looking toward the Centenary

UNIMA International has begun sharing early ideas for the journey toward UNIMA’s 100th anniversary in 2029, which will culminate in Prague, the city where UNIMA was founded.

Early proposals include:

There is so much to share in this month’s newsletter. From BrUNIMA, we have news of our upcoming Annual General Meeting on 14 June, a warm welcome to our new events coordinator Laura, and — most excitingly — details of our featured event Animating the Small on 9 May, a rare and intimate gathering exploring the world of miniature theatre that has very limited in-person places for members, though it will also be streamed live online so everyone can be part of it.

In the wider puppetry community, it’s a vibrant moment too — with organisations like the British Puppet Guild celebrating an impressive 101 years, the Nottingham Puppet Festival recently announcing its 2026 line-up, and a packed programme of events unfolding across the UK and beyond, including the much-loved May Fayre on 10 May in Covent Garden, London.

We’re highlighting Trwco 2026 on 15 May at Small World Theatre in Cardigan — a gathering that feels particularly timely, bringing arts venues large and small from across Wales together to wrestle with the real questions facing our sector: how do theatre buildings respond to the climate emergency, what does decarbonisation actually mean in practice, and how do we move forward together? With speakers including John E McGrath of Factory International, Claire Appleby from the Theatres Trust, and Theatre Green Book’s Catrin John, it promises to be one of the most important conversations happening in the arts this spring. We’re also flagging the Bristol Experimental Puppet Festival (5–14 June), the SIMPOSIO gathering in Tuscany (26–28 June), and a wonderful range of workshops, residencies and summer events for artists at all stages of their practice.

Our friends at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland are opening the doors this summer to a unique and intensive 5-day puppetry course designed for performers, theatre-makers, and curious creatives aged 16+ who are ready to expand their practice.

Meet Your Tutor: Gavin Glover

With over 30 years of experience in theatre and visual performance, Gavin Glover is one of the UK’s most distinctive voices in contemporary puppetry.

Originally trained at London’s Little Angel Theatre, Gavin went on to co-found FaultyOptic, a company celebrated for its dark, surreal, and internationally touring puppet productions, including Snuffhouse-Dustlouse, Soiled, and Tunnelvision. Their innovative work—often supported by Arts Council England and the British Council—helped redefine adult puppetry on the global stage.

Now a freelance artist, Gavin collaborates across disciplines as a director, designer, performer, and educator. He regularly leads specialist workshops (including The Darker Side of Puppetry and Micro Cinema Theatre) and has coached actors at institutions such as the National Theatre of Scotland and The Abbey Theatre, Dublin.

🎓 About the Artist

Dominik Migač is a recent graduate of the Department of Alternative and Puppet Theatre at DAMU (Prague). His work is currently touring festivals across Europe, and he regularly leads workshops focused on integrating technology and puppetry.

His award-winning production Loops and Hoops explores the oppressive uniformity of the former Czechoslovak totalitarian regime through inventive mechanical systems and multimedia scenography.

🧵 About the Workshop

This two-day, hands-on glove puppet making workshop invites participants to design and build their own unique puppet character using recycled and re-harvested materials. Across the two sessions, you will learn techniques including carving, papier-mâché, sewing, painting, and assembling a finished glove puppet.

Participants will:

• Carve expressive puppet heads and hands from re-used styrofoam

• Use paper, glue, and paint to shape and finish features

• Sew and construct costumes using recycled clothing and fabrics

• Develop a character through making, guided by Anne’s socially engaged approach

You are encouraged to bring a piece of clothing or textile to incorporate into your puppet, giving new life to existing materials.

This workshop is suitable for beginners and experienced makers alike, and offers a supportive, collaborative environment focused on creativity, storytelling, and shared making.

🎭 About the Artist

Anne Murray (Ireland/USA, based in Spain) is a puppet maker and socially engaged artist whose work centres on puppetry as a tool for advocacy, healing, and collective expression.

Her project, Refuge Puppets, creates spaces where people affected by trauma, displacement, and conflict can come together through making and performance. Her practice connects craft with activism—bringing visibility to lived experiences that are often marginalised or unheard.

As part of the festival, Anne will also present her giant puppet “Aboud”, representing a real child in Gaza, and take part in a Palestinian Solidarity Night featuring films by puppeteers in Gaza and the West Bank. This event will raise funds to support their ongoing work.

The Bristol Experimental Puppet Festival is a 10-day, cross-city, DIY festival taking place in June 2026, celebrating the vibrant and often hidden world of puppetry.

Bringing together local collectives and international artists, the festival invites audiences and participants alike to experience puppetry in unexpected forms—through performances, workshops, parades, film screenings, and interventions in public space.

Rooted in collaboration and experimentation, the festival aims to:

• Animate the city through creative and rebellious expression

Interested in making your own work? Have a great show but need support to get it on the road? Thinking about becoming a self-employed creative? Nuts and Bolts is a volunteer-led artist network offering guidance and support to freelance artists and small companies who are interested in producing their own work. This network is suitable for theatre and outdoor arts emerging creatives, producers and makers looking to broaden their work across wider sectors.

The Nuts and Bolts Lounge

Monthly, free, online informal open guidance sessions — giving you the opportunity to ask questions, pick up insider tips, expand your network and gain support. Hosted by volunteer producers and artists, the lounge is a regular meet-up covering the practical, non-artistic side of making your own work: from the glamour of a good spreadsheet to the realities of getting work programmed and being on the road.

The lounge is not focused on the artistic process — it’s about the nuts and bolts of running a creative practice. There are a few ground rules for joining:

• This is not a space to advertise your work to others — please keep questions brief and to the point.

• Share the network with other creatives, but keep invites relevant.

• Be respectful and kind. That’s pretty much it!

Artists and producers supporting the network are giving their time freely. Please don’t expect anything outside of the lounge — though 1:1 conversations can be requested directly with artists at their discretion.

Towards Sustainability in the Arts Space

Trwco 2026 — a gathering for anyone who runs, manages, programmes, tours to, or cares about theatre and cultural spaces.

We at British UNIMA are delighted to share news of Trwco 2026, hosted by our friends at Small World Theatre in Cardigan, west Wales. Small World Theatre is one of the UK’s leading near-zero carbon arts spaces — a working model of what sustainable, community-rooted theatre can look like. Trwco is their annual gathering that brings artists, venue managers, environmental thinkers and policy makers together around ideas at the intersection of creativity, science and climate action. This year’s theme feels urgent and timely: sustainability in the arts space.

If you work in theatre or outdoor arts — as a maker, producer, venue manager or touring artist — this is a day well worth your time.

About Trwco

Trwco is not a typical conference. Curated and hosted by Small World Theatre’s founding directors Ann Shrosbree and Bill Hamblett, previous events have included a guided walk through temperate rainforest led by a lichenologist, exploring lichens as indicators of climate change. This year the focus turns to theatre buildings and arts spaces themselves — how they respond to the climate emergency, and what comes next.

The questions at the heart of the day are ones the whole sector is grappling with: how do our theatre buildings respond to the climate emergency? What does decarbonisation mean in practice? How can programming and content support meaningful change? And how do we move forward together?

Arts venues large and small from across Wales will come together to share challenges, exchange solutions and chart a way forward for the sector.
